June corn lookouts

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest By Luke Schulte, Beck’s HybridsAs I am writing this, many corn and soybean acres have yet to be planted throughout the state. However, my hope is that by the time you read this, your crop will have emerged and will be growing vigorously. One thing that is certain for later planted corn is that the vegetative growth period will be expedited. By now, many of you have been made aware of the research conducted by The Ohio State University and Purdue University which has shown that, on average, a hybrid requires 6.8 GDU’s less per day to reach black layer or physiological maturity when planted after May 1. This is possible because of the accelerated accumulation of heat units or GDU’s. Instead of producing a new leaf every five to seven days prior to the V7 growth stage, later planted corn will more likely produce a new leaf every four to six days within this same period. Corn that is between the V7 and VT growth stage typically produces a new leaf every two to three days, and late-planted corn leaf production will likely occur even quicker. This is important for several reasons, but primarily for the timely completion of sidedress nitrogen (N) applications as well as post-application herbicide treatments. Sidedress nitrogenNitrogen is important to corn for several reasons; however, its role in photosynthesis and silk development is critical. In the process of photosynthesis, chlorophyll absorbs light energy to transform carbon dioxide and water into carbohydrates and oxygen. Chlorophyll is primarily comprised of N. While the process of photosynthesis is key to corn at any planting date, late-planted corn has an increased need to maximize light absorption due to its condensed growing season.Nitrogen is also a fundamental component to silk development and thus, pollination. Corn begins the rapid N uptake period around the V7 to V8 growth stage and initial silk development occurs at approximately the V10 growth stage. Nitrogen is a vegetative nutrient that helps to drive silk development. Corn plants absorb N from the soil as both ammonium (NH4+) and nitrate (NO3-) ions, but because nitrate N moves freely towards the roots as they absorb water, most N is taken up as nitrate. Because the process of converting ammonium to nitrate can take several weeks, sidedress applications must be made with enough time prior to the rapid N uptake period to ensure adequate soil nitrate N is available for the plant. This is even more important when utilizing anhydrous ammonia, urea, or ammonium sulfate sources of N in sidedress treatments. POST herbicide treatmentsLate-planted corn can grow extremely fast, deceptively outgrowing post-application herbicide height restrictions. See example herbicide labels below:Roundup PowerMAX: Broadcast through V8 or 30 inches, 30- to 48-inch corn requires drop nozzlesLiberty: Up to 24-inch corn or in the V7 growth stageWhile a portion of the labeled height precaution speaks to the ability of getting adequate weed coverage as the corn plant grows taller and develops more leaves, it’s also important to recall what is taking place with the development of the stalk at various growth stages. The number of rows per ear is determined between the V5 and V8 growth stages while the potential number of kernels per row is determined approximately a week before silks emerge. Even hybrids containing herbicide-tolerant traits must still metabolize any post-applied herbicides. Because of this, post-application treatments applied off-label, or too late in the season, have the potential to negatively impact ear size.Be careful when it comes to deciding whether to utilize growth regulator herbicides (those containing dicamba, Stinger, or 2,4-D) in post-applications as these products have the potential to make corn brittle. As referenced above, late-planted corn will progress through the vegetative growth stages very quickly, making it already more vulnerable to wind or mechanical injury.last_img read more

This Tiny Gizmo Could Be A Very Big Deal In 2013 – And Beyond

first_imgThe company is called Leap Motion, and if you want to get an idea of how much everyone in San Francisco is buzzing about them, consider this: A few weeks ago I was visiting a different hot new startup in San Francisco, and in the middle of their demo the executives said, “By the way, have you heard about Leap Motion?” Then they interrupted their own demo to show me a video showing what Leap Motion’s software does. That mindblowing video has been viewed more than 7 million times since Leap Motion put it on YouTube last May. Basically the engineers at Leap Motion have invented the 3D user interface of the future. You don’t use a keyboard and mouse; you don’t even use a touch screen. You just move your fingers in the air, and, as if by magic, with zero latency and pinpoint accuracy, stuff happens on your screen. Think of Microsoft’s Kinect controller, but way better. Leap Motion claims its device is 200 times more accurate than anything on the market and can track your finger movements down to 1/100th of a millimeter. The first version of the product will be delivered in a little plastic hockey puck that you connect to your laptop or desktop computer. This little device will start shipping early in 2013 at an incredible price — only $69.99 gives you a new toy that isn’t quite like the user interface from Minority Report, but it’s not that far off, either. Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Welcome To The FutureWired called this “the best gesture-control system we’ve ever tested.” The Verge called it “the next big thing in computing.”Leap Motion has already received preorders worth tens of millions of dollars, says Andy Miller, the company’s president and COO.Miller, by the way, is a former top executive at Apple, and his team is packed with Apple veterans. Leap Motion was founded in 2010 by Michael Buckwald, a serial entrepreneur who serves as CEO, and David Holz, a former NASA engineer who previously was working at NASA. Holz’s official title is CTO but he lists himself on LinkedIn as a “mad scientist.” One of their first investors was Marc Andreessen, the founder of Netscape. Now do you see why everyone in San Francisco is so excited about these guys?By this time next year we might be reading stories not just about how Leap Motion was one of the hot products of 2013, but about how this product changed everything.Beyond ComputersBecause Leap Motion has big plans. Laptops and desktops are just the start. “The consumer is side a way of getting it out there, but the bigger business might be licensing deals,” Miller says. “We have been contacted by thousands of businesses that want to use this.”He reels off potential applications that range from robotic surgery to fighter jets, from semiconductor clean rooms to fast-food restaurant kitchens. “We’ve talked about seatback screens on planes,” he says. “Climate control systems. Set-top boxes and TVs and remote controls. Tablets. MRIs.”McDonald’s and Jack in the Box like the idea of putting Leap Motion controllers in their kitchens so that workers can manipulate screens without having to touch them.Others want to use Leap Motion in casinos, nightclubs and DJ booths to let people control huge video boards.“This is a big thing that really could change the way we interact with devices,” Miller says.Leap Motion won’t have a booth at CES, but will be present at the show. Miller won’t offer any more info as the deals have not yet been announced.Better Yet, There’s An SDKLeap Motion has created a software developers kit so that others can write apps for the device. So far the company has received more than 40,000 applications from developers. Leap Motion will send 10,000 free units to developers so they can start writing apps. Those developers will dream up ways to use Leap Motion that the company itself might never have imagined, just as happened when Apple threw open the iPhone to outside developers and spawned a huge new industry of apps-makers.One guy has already figured out how to use a Leap Motion controller to drive a quadcopter:  Image courtesy of Leap Motion. dan lyons 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketcenter_img Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Tags:#Apple#gesture control#Kinect#Leap Motion Related Posts A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai…last_img read more

Blame game on as train mows down 5 elephants in Assam

first_imgA passenger train mowed down five elephants on Saturday night, triggering a blame game between the Assam forest department and Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR).The engine of the train derailed due to the impact at 9.40 p.m. The section was restored after the engine was put back on track almost five hours later.Forest officials said the drivers of the 15611 Guwahati-Silchar Fast Passenger train ignored flashlight signals and ran into a herd of elephants crossing the track in central Assam’s Hojai district. They said the spot between Hawaipur and Lamshakhan stations, some 180 km east of Guwahati, is a notified elephant corridor.Railway officials claimed the section where the elephants were crossing was not a notified elephant corridor and that a 30 kph speed restriction had been imposed on all trains based on inputs from the Forest Department.Three calves dead“Five elephants, including three calves, reportedly died due to the impact. The loco pilots said the calves did not move from the track and the adult elephants began surrounding them when the accident happened,” an officer of the Lumding Railway Division said.“Our people are trying their best to prevent elephant casualties, but the railways seem to be taking such incidents lightly. I cannot fault our department as the railways had been informed about the movement of elephants and forest guards had tried to warn the drivers with flashlights,” Forest Minister Pramila Rani Brahma said on Sunday.A railway line passes through 13% of the elephant corridors in the Northeast, primarily Assam. Though the NFR said Saturday’s tragedy did not happen in one of them, forest officials said they submitted a list of 19 places along railway tracks where elephants have been moving across tracks constantly in Lumding, Hojai and Lanka forest ranges.Saturday’s accident site falls under the Lanka forest range, the area’s wildlife officials said. According to the NFR, incidents of elephant crossings have increased sharply in the recent past and trains have been slowed down whenever the Forest Department shared information on herd movement.Coordination is crucial“It is only because of the close coordination between field level officials of the forest and railway departments that 200 incidents have been prevented this year alone,” NFR spokesperson Pranav Jyoti Sharma said. The NFR is keen on mitigating elephant mortality on railway tracks but at the same time safety of train movements has to be ensured, he added.Green activists say encroachment and habitat destruction have forced elephants to stray out of traditional routes for food. One such diversion in December last year saw five wild elephants being knocked down by a speeding train near a tea estate in north-central Assam’s Sonitpur district. Data provided by the Wildlife Division of Assam’s Forest Department say electrocution, train-hit and attack by villagers killed 40 elephants in 2017. Despite the mortality, elephant population in Assam rose from 5,246 in 2002 to 5,719 last year.last_img read more
