Samsung Premiere 2013 to Unveil New Galaxy and Ativ Lineup on 20

first_imgSouth Korean giant Samsung has sent out press invites for a special event called ‘Samsung premiere 2013’ which is scheduled to be held at Earls Court 2, London, on 20 June. The event will see a new lineup of its Galaxy and Ativ series. The invitation shows close-ups of three products leading to the assumption that at least three new devices will be unveiled at the event. The company’s Galaxy brand includes Android phones and tablets, while Ativ is a unified brand that has Windows phone, Windows 8, Windows RT laptops, tablets and hybrids. The launch event will kick off at 7 pm BST that day and will be live-streamed in Samsung’s YouTube channel for the rest of the world to see.It was only two months ago when Samsung’s Galaxy S4 was launched and claimed record sales in global markets. Since then, there have been rumours regarding the release date of the miniature version of S4 Mini.If one is to go by the images that accompanied the press release, then it suggests a tablet, a camera and a laptop. The best bets for the Android products to be unveiled, as speculated by the tech media around the world, are Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom which will be a Galaxy Camera follow-up, Galaxy S4 Mini or the Galaxy S4 Active. Its Ativ product is expected to be a Windows 8 tablet. The possibility of Samsung showing off the Galaxy Note 3’s display at the event has been ruled out since the device is to be launched later this year. The ‘Samsung Premiere 2013′ will be held after Apple’s yearly Worldwide Developers’ Conference which is scheduled on 10 June and will precede Microsoft’s annual BUILD conference which is on 26 June, both to be held at San Francisco.last_img read more

The Queens love for Meghan Markle fake Duchess being used as PR

first_imgMeghan MarkleGetty ImagesMeghan Markle may not have been the Queen’s favourite after all. Though the Queen is gracious and cordial to the Duchess of Sussex when they are in public, it seems that the Queen’s affection is all for the cameras.According to the claims of a documentary, the “grandmotherly love” the monarch showed could have been a PR exercise. Being part of the Royal Family comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages, one of these disadvantages being that the members of the Royal Family are always under the scrutiny of the media. Meghan Markle has been a part of the Royal Family only for a little while, which makes her a novice in Royalty’s public relations. The Queen, on the other hand, is a veteran at handling and presenting a Royal image to the world. Now according to reports, the Queen and Meghan Markle have an amicable relationship where Meghan apparently refers to the monarch as “Mama” in private. However, according to the documentary “Harry and Meghan: the first 100 days”, the Queen’s warm behaviour could be a PR exercise by the Palace.  Meghan MarkleGetty ImagesMeghan Markle has been on the Queen’s radar for a while now, especially with reports of a Royal feud brewing between the Duchesses of Cambridge and Sussex. The Queen tamped down any attempt by Meghan to separate herself from the Royal family and to carve out her own path. But it seems that the Queen could be making an effort with Meghan Markle as the Palace may not want a repeat of what happened with Princess Diana. Either way, it seems the Queen and the Duchess of Sussex have many opportunities to work on their relationship. Meghan Markle is expected to give birth this month and the couple Sussex will be moving to Frogmore cottage after the arrival of the baby.last_img read more

Over 270 dead in Colombia mudslides

first_imgAerial view of a neighborhood destroyed after flooding and mudslides caused by heavy rains leading several rivers to overflow, pushing sediment and rocks into buildings and roads, in Mocoa. ReutersThe Colombian government on Monday declared a state of economic emergency in the town of Mocoa in southern Colombia, after mudslides left more than 270 people dead, including 43 children.”We have the toll of the people who have unfortunately died,” said President Juan Manuel Santos, as he revisited the scene of Friday’s disaster.”The latest is 273 people died and 262 are injured,” he said. Earlier he said that at least 43 children were among the dead.Santos was to spend the night at a nearby military base and on Tuesday would continue coordinating the emergency response. The president said reconstruction would begin, dismissing risks of further mudslides, but he warned that the country faces rainy weather until June.Santos has flown into the disaster zone for three straight days to oversee the relief effort. He declared an economic emergency Monday to free up relief funds, amplifying the public health and safety emergency he had already declared. The mudslides occurred Friday after heavy rains caused three rivers to overflow, spewing earth, rocks and tree debris over the area. Most of the hardest-hit neighborhoods are poor and populated with people uprooted during Colombia’s five-decade-long civil war.Mocoa was home to 70,000 people, according to Sorrel Aroca, the governor of Putumayo department. The Red Cross estimated about 45,000 people in Mocoa were affected by the mudslides.Hopes of finding survivors were fading Monday as some 200 people remained missing.Rescuers clawed through mud and timber as relatives desperately sought loved ones.People, houses swept awaySurvivors told of scrambling onto roofs or hanging onto trees as a sea of mud, boulders and debris engulfed Mocoa late Friday. Some watched as their children and relatives were swept away.Among them was Ercy Lopez, 39, who was left hanging on a tree after the deluge tore away her home.Lying on a mattress in a shelter for survivors, she said people were still searching for her 22-year-old daughter Diana Vanesa.”The hopes of finding her alive are slim now,” she said.Debris was everywhere in the remote Amazon town: buried cars, uprooted trees, children’s toys and odd shoes sticking up out of the mud.Survivors gathered at the local hospital and at the cemetery to search for family members and friends.Yulieth Rosero had just buried her sister, but was holding out hope of finding her seven-year-old nephew, Juan David Rueda.”I found his little brother, William. He’s alive. He’s in shock, injured and has no clothes, but he’s OK,” said Rosero, 23.Hundreds of rescuers were working at the scene of the disaster, using mechanical diggers in the search.Locals said it was never safe to live so close to the three rivers that overflowed after days of torrential rain.Wilson Chilito, 22, said he scrambled onto the roof of a house from where he watched “people, fridges and houses” being swept away.He lost his sister, mother-in-law and at least two other relatives.”This was foreseen for a long time,” he told AFP as he packed up belongings from his home, his boots full of mud.Founded in 1563, “the town has about 10 rivers running through it,” said Mocoa Mayor Jose Antonio Castro, quoted by newspaper El Espectador.”That means it is not a place where a town should be located.”- Vomiting mud -Carlos Acosta had survived by clinging to a tree branch.”I was dying due to a lack of air — so what did I do? I stuck my finger in my mouth and vomited a lot of mud,” Acosta, 25, told AFP.”I sneezed out mud until I could breathe again.”He could not save his three-year-old son, Camilo, however. The two were swept away together. But Acosta was knocked unconscious, and when he woke up the child was gone.Residents began burying their loved ones as the identified bodies were returned. A mass funeral was held at a local cemetery, where workers toiled to dig enough holes for the piles of coffins.Santos said the mudslide destroyed a local aqueduct and knocked out power to much of the surrounding area.He said four emergency water treatment plants would be set up to avoid epidemics of diseases such as cholera.Colombia’s worst disaster was a volcanic eruption in 1985 that triggered a landslide and destroyed the city of Armero, killing 25,000 people.last_img read more

Nickelberry Resigns from Howard

first_imgBy Mark F. Gray, AFRO Staff Writer, mgray@afro.comHoward University is looking for a new men’s basketball coach after Kevin Nickelberry resigned following their loss in the College Basketball Invitational Tournament.  The former Bison coach couldn’t save his job despite their most wins in over two decades and their first postseason appearance since 1992 when the university chose not to renew his contract.Despite injuries, suspensions and a shroud of controversy that hovered over the team most of the season, Nickelberry may have done his best job on the Howard sideline in his second tenure there.Kevin Nickelberry resigned from his postion as Howard University’s men’s basketball coach. (Courtesy Photo)“I am blessed to have had the opportunity to serve as head coach at Howard University,” said Nickelberry in a statement released by the school’s athletic department. “I am truly grateful for the opportunity and am proud of what we have been able to accomplish.”Nickelberry improved the talent base and recruited players who raised the profile of the basketball program. His recruiting prowess brought international talent from Africa and France who made immediate impact and steadily improved. In addition to this year’s Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Year R.J. Cole and first team all-conference guard Charles Williams, two years ago he also coached the nation’s leading scorer James Daniel.  This past season he stewarded a team with injuries that forced him to play the early part of the season with a truncated lineup, while playing their schedule of “guaranteed” games against major conference opposition that lower division programs take for their financial impact on the athletic program.“Coach Nickelberry has laid a strong foundation for the future success of Howard men’s basketball, I sincerely wish him all the best as he pursues other opportunities in his career,” said Howard athletic director Kery Davis in his statement. However, Nickelberry’s fate may have been sealed before the season began when he was named as a defendant in a lawsuit by two former players allegeding Howard engaged in practices that violated NCAA regulations and they reneged on scholarship promises that derailed their future basketball opportunities.Former players Ausar Madison and Kai Tease filed a $9 million  lawsuit in D.C. Superior Court in October 2018 claiming that during the summer of 2013, Nickelberry “guaranteed” Madison “a perpetual scholarship” set to begin in the 2014-15 season, but reneged on his promise three times.Madison also claimed that Nickelberry said he would receive a scholarship beginning the following year, but never fulfilled the commitment. Madison, who is still a student at Howard, left the basketball program in January 2017 and “has never received any funds from an athletic scholarship,” according to the lawsuit. The lawsuit alleges that Howard knew of Tease’s learning disability and “Nickelberry personally ensured that [he] would receive all the academic support required, supplied and subsidized by Howard.” Tease claims he never received any accommodations and left the university last December.Meanwhile, the optics of last February’s postgame melee following their home loss to the eventual MEAC regular season champions Norfolk State may have been the final nail in his coffin.  After a fight began in the stands then moved to the floor, both teams had to be separated when trying to head into the locker rooms.  Sources tell the {AFRO} that while Nickelberry didn’t encourage his players to participate in the fracas, he didn’t do enough to diffuse the situation either.A national search has begun for a coach to inherit a program that is set to contend for the MEAC Championship immediately.  The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) meets during the Final Four in Minneapolis and Howard’s job opening appears to have caught the attention of several coaches with former ties to major college programs.last_img read more
