Google Search in Gmail Gets Smarter

first_imgBack in April 2009, Google introduced Google Search, a little-known feature in Gmail labs that allows users to search Google without ever leaving the Gmail interface. Today, Google announced that it is improving this feature with a number of useful new functions. Google Search in Gmail can now access most of the more advanced features of Google Search, including dictionary definitions, spelling corrections, calculations, weather and local search. In addition, Google is now also highlighting these new features through an additional button in the Gmail toolbar. While this might look like a very minor new feature, Google Search in Gmail actually turns out to be quite useful. Being able to search Google’s index directly from Gmail without having to leave the site is nice, but what makes this feature work is the ability to quickly copy and paste the search results into your email. You can choose to copy the full search result (including the description of the site) or just the link. Sadly, though, Google Search in Gmail doesn’t allow you to search Google Maps and easily copy and paste a map into an email message. To enable Google Search in Gmail, go to Gmail Labs and look for “Google Search” (around the middle of the page). HTML5: Hulu Says No, Muxtape Says Yes

first_img9 Books That Make Perfect Gifts for Industry Ex… 5 Outdoor Activities for Beating Office Burnout 4 Keys to a Kid-Safe App Innovative music startup Muxtape has announced that its future lies in HTML5. “I’m done with Flash,” developer Justin Ouellette wrote this morning. Though a much smaller company, Muxtape’s embrace of HTML5 is particularly notable as it happened on the same day that video portal Hulu said it was not going to support the new format any time soon.“HTML5 is great and does not require Steve Jobs’ permission to run a competing music market,” Muxtape wrote on its company blog. “Running in Mobile Safari has other advantages, too,” says Ouellette. “Since it’s privileged by Apple to run in the background, you can listen to music and use pretty much any other app simultaneously. For now this is only possible with HTML5.”“HTML5 is great and does not require Steve Jobs’ permission to run a competing music market.”…”Since it’s privileged by Apple to run in the background, you can listen to music and use pretty much any other app simultaneously. For now this is only possible with HTML5.”Muxtape made its splash as a wonderfully simple music player website for user generated playlists. After a short period of niche popularity, the company announced that it was shutting down due to music copyright pressure. Months later it relaunched as “a platform for bands.”The HTML5/Flash conflict has been watched closely all around the world because of the desirability of multimedia on Apple systems. Hulu, for example, cannot be viewed on the iPad because the company does not support HTML5 yet. Hulu VP of product Eugene Wei wrote this morning that HTML5 isn’t ready for prime-time yet. HTML5 lacks maturity in reporting, advertising and content security, Wei argued. Those are concerns that many companies are liable to share. As an independent and formerly legally questionable music outlet, Muxtape is very different from the mega-corporate premium content channel Hulu. Muxtape has presumably always placed less priority on things like reporting, advertising and content security. A demo HTML5 site has been set up by Muxtape at itllbebetter.com. 6 Positive Constraints

first_imgThe new currency of high-performance is focus and attention, both of which are in short supply. Giving your focus and attention over to important work is going to separate successful, high-performing, achievers from people who do not reach their full potential.Constraints provide discipline. You have to be willing to give up what you want now for what you want later. You have to give up what may be more entertaining and more enjoyable now for the meaningful work that is your life’s purpose.Turn Off Your Email: There is not a single piece of legislation, federal, state, or local, that requires you to be constantly present to respond to your email. Not only can you turn off the notifications that you received a new email, you can actually close your email program completely. By turning off your email completely you can give your full focus and attention to your real work, the work aligned with your purpose and that gives your life meaning.Only Process Email a Few Times a Day: You can check your email twice a day if you want to. Maybe you need to look more often than that, so go ahead and check it four times a day. I process my email inboxes to zero twice a week, once on Saturdays and once on Wednesdays. When I check it on the other days, I respond to what needs a response, and I leave much of it sitting in the inbox. Because I know I will process it in a few days, I’m okay.Shut Off Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram Notifications: You can live without the serotonin drip of being mentioned on Twitter, tagged on Facebook, or whatever it is we do on Instagram. Somebody liked your tweet. Somebody loved your Facebook post. Somebody clicked the little heart on the picture you took. All of those things will be waiting for you later, after you’ve done your most important work.Turn Off Text Notifications: Open the settings on your smart phone. Find the setting for notifications. Go through and shut off the notifications for every application that notifies you with something that is not only not urgent but is also not important. Then find the setting for “do not disturb.” This function will only allow through text messages and phone calls from the people on your favorite list (I use the iPhone 6S Plus). Now you can fearlessly turn off almost all notifications, knowing that the most important people in your life can still get through.Close Your Browser: Close your browser. Close your browser. Close your browser. There is absolutely no reason to leave the Internet open all day and night, every day. Close all the tabs. Find a software package that allows you to write in a plain text file outside of the browser window.Turn Off Your Phone: Clearly we have merged with our machines. You recognize that your smart phone is now a part of your body as attached to your left arm as is the left hand that holds it. Turn off your phone while you are eating breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Turn it off when you’re in a sales call. Turn it off when you want to give someone you care about your full, undivided attention. This is a super positive constraint. If there is something else that is neither important or urgent but serves as a distraction preventing you from doing what you should be doing, find a way to constrain it by turning it off, shutting it down, or ignoring it completely. Frog figurines ‘separated’ in Bhopal after heavy rains

first_imgSamiti to organise ‘Chitranna Seve’for ‘balance’ in rainfall in Karnataka  “We got two clay frogs made and married them in order to bring rains to the State. But the rains are incessant now, so we separated them to stop the downpour,” Suresh Agarwal of the mandal told PTI.Madhya Pradesh has been witnessing heavy rains over the past few days, leading to several rivers flowing above the danger mark and low-lying areas getting inundated.A proper “separation ceremony” was conducted at the Turant Mahadev temple in Bhopal, and the two clay frogs were then released into a vessel filled with water amid chanting of mantras. The rainfall in the State so far has been 31 per cent excess of the annual average. Bhopal has received 81 per cent excess rain, an official of the India Meteorological Department said. A couple of months after they were wedded, two frog idols were ‘divorced’ in Bhopal earlier this week in hope that it would ‘reverse the effect’ of their union — the ceaseless rain.As per a long-standing superstition, frogs’ marriage appeases the rain gods and brings showers to parched areas.Members of Om Shiv Shakti Mandal, a local group from Indrapuri area, had two clay frogs married with a ceremony in July as the State awaited rains. Also Readlast_img read more

$100 Million Upgrading for May Pen Hospital

first_imgThe May Pen Hospital is slated to undergo a multi-million dollar upgrading and rehabilitation project this fiscal year. This was disclosed by Health Minister, Hon. Dr. Fenton Ferguson on Friday, April 12, following a tour of the Clarendon-based facility.Dr. Fergsuon said the project is estimated to cost between $96 million and $100 million, with approximately $64 million of the amount already approved by Cabinet. He said he is awaiting consent for an additional $32 million for upgrading of the chiller system at the hospital. The improvements works will entail modernisation of the hospital’s radiology department at a cost of $27.8 million, to provide digital services.A sum of $15.6 million will be spent to expand the Accident and Emergency Department and provide well-needed equipment. Already, three new air conditioning units have been acquired. In addition, some $8 million will go towards upgrading the hospital’s sewerage system, while an estimated $5.4 million is earmarked for improving security services, including the provision of surveillance equipment, as well as grillwork.A further $5 million will be used to improve food trolley services at the hospital, the Minister said, noting that “presently, the region is spending over $500,000 per month to deal with the disposal of food”. He noted that, provided there is funding, work will also be done to the hospital’s roof and road network, while the perimeter fencing will be addressed in the next fiscal year.“We have had some initial estimates in the region of $40 million and we have said to the Member of Parliament and the leaders of this institution that we are committed to the process, and our expectation is that our 2014/15 budget will see that as a priority,” he stated.Dr. Ferguson, in the meantime, informed that the Ministry has committed a sum of $1 million for a major Labour Day project at the hospital.“My special appeal is that the business sector, companies that distribute paint and other kinds of hardware material, in and around May Pen, and beyond, will come onboard for this worthy exercise,” he urged.“Many of your workers are the beneficiaries of the health care delivery system and we feel that a partnership will be a major achievement in establishing this hospital as a centre of excellence,” the Minister stated further.Accompanying Dr. Ferguson on the tour were: Mayor of Clarendon, Councillor Scean Barnswell; Member of Parliament for Central Clarendon, Mike Henry; Chairperson, Southern Regional Health Authority, Fay Bell; and Chief Executive Officer, May Pen Hospital, Nadia Nunes-Howe.By Athaliah Reynolds-Baker, JIS Reporterlast_img read more
