Aguero Tags Eagles ‘Weak’ Team in Group D

first_imgWORLD CUP 2018NFF plans friendly with EnglandFemi Solaja with agency reportArgentina and Manchester City forward, Sergio Aguero, has tagged Nigeria as the least headache of the South American nation in the Group D pairings of the World Cup 2018. Despite the 4-2 defeat suffered by the Albeceleste in last month’s friendly against the Super Eagles in Krosnodar, Russia, Aguero told Argentine publication, Dobleamarilla, yesterday that he respects Croatia and is still wondering on what to expect from Iceland. The Manchester City star, in what appears a mind game, dismissed Nigeria as a team not to be worried about.Aguero described Nigeria’s victory in that friendly as ‘accidental’ aided by his absence in the second half of the match due to the exhaustion that led to his unconsciousness and hospitalization. He told the publication that he only asked about what happened after he regained consciousness. Aguero insisted that Argentina lost because the players were thinking more about him in the hospital.“That happens sometimes, because it was because they thought of me, they were scared. I do not know, “stressed Aguero. On Croatia, Aguero said: “Croatia has a great midfield. They have Luka Modric, Ivan Rakitic, there is Perisic who plays outside and he’s very fast. Croatia is a bit more complete.”He continued: “Iceland is one of the debutants, they do not play badly, they are a very organised team and they have (Gylfi) Sigurdsson, who is the one who drives the team. We play them first; they are therefore the most important game for us. They will not be easy.”On the overall, Aguero said it was good that Argentina was not tipped as one of the top favourites to win at Russia 2018.He believes that the pendulum of victory is likely to swing in the directions of France, Germany and Brazil.“It’s good that they do not take us as candidates (for the trophy),” concludes the Man City forward. In a related development, the Super Eagles are to play a pre-World Cup friendly with England, UK-based Skysport reported yesterday.Skysport quoted the General Secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Mohammed Sanusi, to have confirmed the proposed game. However, there is no confirmation from the English FA on the match.“We plan to play a friendly against England in June, before the World Cup,” Sanusi told Skysport, stressing that the venue and other details of the match were still to be worked out. Both nations will feature at next year’s World Cup in Russia, with Gareth Southgate’s England paired to play Belgium, Panama and Tunisia in Group G.Nigeria last played England at the 2002 World Cup in Osaka, Japan on June 12, 2002 in a match Coach Adegboye Onigbinde had to ring changes from the earlier line-up of Nigeria in the preceding matches with Argentina and Sweden.Vincent Enyeama was handed his first World Cup cap in that game. Before then, the Super Eagles had played a friendly with England on June 16, 1995 at the Wembley when Amodu Shaibu made his managerial debut with Nigeria. Eagles lost 1-0.Share this:FacebookRedditTwitterPrintPinterestEmailWhatsAppSkypeLinkedInTumblrPocketTelegramlast_img read more

Tiago Splitter scores 22 in Spurs win over Clippers

first_imgJamal Crawford scored 24 points, Blake Griffin had 19 points and Darren Collison added 14 points and six assists starting in place of Paul, who separated his right shoulder Friday night against the Dallas Mavericks.Los Angeles gave up 70 points in the first half for the second consecutive night, but rallying proved tougher to do against a 35-point lead than the three-point deficit they faced against Dallas. “It’s easier to do it once you play so bad the game before because you know the mistakes you made,” Ginobili said. “We were really sharp from the beginning; our first half was great. Then we kind of stopped a little bit, but the first half was fun to watch. Everybody sharing the ball, attacking, being quick, rotations real sharp, really good first half.”While the Clippers understandably stalled without their leader, who is expected to be out three to five weeks, the rest of their game disappeared, too.“No one has to replace Chris’ anything,” Griffin said. “Not his voice, not his game, nothing. Everybody does things differently. We don’t have any other guys that talk like Chris. It’ll work just fine. In the second half we were communicating with each other. That’s all we needed. We didn’t need anyone to talk like Chris. That would be our biggest mistake, is to try to replace him with someone or something.” SAN ANTONIO — Tiago Splitter and the Spurs got out to a fast start, then hung on for a bumpier second half against the disorganized Los Angeles Clippers.Splitter had a season-high 22 points before he was hurt, Tim Duncan added 19 points and 11 rebounds, and San Antonio beat Los Angeles 116-92 Saturday night in their first game without injured All-Star Chris Paul.Tony Parker had 17 points, Manu Ginobili added 15 points and Kawhi Leonard had 10 points for San Antonio (26-8). Splitter left with 9:37 remaining, injuring his right shoulder after charging into Ryan Hollins’ chest. Los Angeles had just one rebound in the first quarter while allowing San Antonio to score a season-high 37 points.“In the first half we looked more AAU,” Clippers coach Doc Rivers said. “The ball stuck. I bet half the time it was one pass, shot; one pass, shot.”After Collison’s jumper with 2:20 left in the first, Los Angeles didn’t score again until Matt Barnes’ layup with 9:40 left in the half. San Antonio extended its lead to 70-35 at the half, its season high for point in an opening half.NOTESSpurs F Boris Diaw missed the game with an undisclosed illness. . The Clippers’ Stephen Jackson received a mixed reaction upon entering the game in the final 2 minutes. Jackson was waived late last season after reportedly butting heads with Spurs coach Gregg Popovich. . The Spurs’ public address announcer mistakenly screamed “Manu Ginobili” in the opening minute of game, crediting him with an assist on Tiago Splitter’s basket even though the guard had yet to enter. The assist actually belonged to Marco Belinelli, Ginobili’s friend and former Euroleague teammate. . When the shot clock resent incorrectly late in the third quarter, Rivers asked if they could start over. After official Monty McCutchen said they would reset it, Rivers said, “No, can we start the game over?”center_img Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorlast_img read more
