LOS ANGELES (AP) — A helicopter crew rescued a person from a tiny island in the rain-swollen Los Angeles River as a heavy late-season storm moved through Southern California on Monday. Working near power lines, the Fire Department helicopter lowered a rescuer to the island, then hoisted both to the side of the river shortly after 11 a.m. It was not immediately known how the person ended up on the island, a cluster of boulders and trees in the river, or for how long the person was stranded, said Fire Department spokesman Jim Wells.
