Read on to know more…Malady 1DiabetesCurrently the diabetes capital of the world, India sees the numbers grow every day. There are two kinds of diabetes – type I and type II. Type I diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas don’t produce enough insulin to control blood sugar levels. It can happen at any age, but is common among children, adolescents, or young adults. Type II diabetes, or diabetes mellitus or adult-onset diabetes is a metabolic disorder that is characterised by high blood glucose triggered by insulin resistance and relative insulin deficiency. Factors that cause hyper insulin can be genetic, poor food habits and lack of physical activity. Symptoms may include excessive passing of urine and thirst, weight loss, exhaustion, and numbness in the arms and legs.Children and DiabetesMore often than not, children are afflicted with type I diabetes, which is a genetic disorder. In India itself, the cases of childhood diabetes have increased three times in the last 30 years. If your child has diabetes, follow the prescribed treatment religiously to avoid serious complications. Teach him how to inject himself with insulin when he is old enough. Tackle your diabetes now, because complications of long-term diabetes include – damage to the retina, kidney disease, stroke, heart disease, ulcers and decreased immunity, to name a few.What steps to take:PreventPeople with a family history of the disease can prevent it only by exercising regularly and following a healthy diet.Avoid foods that are high on sugar and fats; and processed foods.advertisementManageGet enough knowledge on the disease; it will help you tackle it well.If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, make sure you visit the doctor regularly and monitor your sugar levels via blood and urine tests.Go for a brisk walk or do yoga daily.Don’t miss meals and follow your prescribed diet religiously. Unfortunately, the underlying threats to one’s health caused by obesity – diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and a shorter life expectancy – are by and large ignored. A sedentary lifestyle, lack of exercise, and eating high-calorie foods can lead to this problem. You know you are obese if your BMI (body mass index) is above normal. BMI is a formula used to estimate how much body fat a person has. The BMI formula uses your height and weight measurements to calculate a number. This number is then plotted on a chart, which tells a person whether he or she is underweight, average weight, overweight, or obese.Obesity in childrenIn recent years, there has been an alarming rise in obesity in Indian children. Around 20 percent of school-going children in our country today are reported to be overweight or obese.More and more tweens and teens today are staying indoors, using high-tech gadgets and watching TV for long hours, with no outdoor activities. Plus, the stress levels caused by studies have also increased and so have bad eating habits. These are the main contributing factors of obesity.’There are many cases of infantile obesity as well. This happens when babies are overfed on commercial baby products.* So try to breast feed as much as possible or choose the best brands in the market to avoid this,’ says Dr MD Shah, paediatrician, pulmonologist and consultant at Nanavati Hospital, Mumbai.’Don’t stop your child from eating. The trick is to manage the quality of food you offer and not the quantity,’ advises Dr MD Shah. ‘You should have frequent meals (five in a day) instead of three heavy ones, so that you don’t burden your pancreas.’What steps to takePrevent and manage Awareness is the first step – know more about obesity-related health hazards, and read self-help books to get started.Consult a dietician and a doctor for guidance. Remember, a doctor may not be sufficiently qualified or up-to-date on diet and nutrition-related matters.Monitor your weight and cut down on junk food, fried snacks and fatty foods. Opt for wholemeal products, cereals, fresh fruits and vegetables instead. Eat small but frequent meals.Exercise regularly; no need to necessarily go to the gym; opt for a sport you like such as tennis or badminton. Start with a 30-minute brisk walk daily if you’ve been sedentary so far.Don’t follow fad diets. Although they will help you drop weight quickly, the euphoria will be short-lived, as the kilos will come back on fast, as soon as you resume your normal diet. Follow a long-term, doable weight reduction programme under the guidance of a well-qualified and reputed nutritionist instead.advertisementMalady 4Atherosclerosis (Leading to heart attack and stroke)’The accumulation of plaque (mostly made of cholesterol) on the inside of your arteries causes its narrowing. This restricts blood flow and leads to clotting, which may in turn result in a heart attack or a stroke, depending on the location of the blockage,’ says Dr Umesh Thakker, consulting physician and cardiologist, Parvish Nursing Home, Mumbai. ‘A hectic work schedule, stressful lifestyle and bad eating habits can lead to this life-threatening disease. Stress induces catabolic hormones, such as, cortisones and these increase the level of cholesterol in the blood,’ he adds.What steps to takePrevent and manageDr Thakker explains, ‘High blood pressure speeds up the formation of plaque. You can control it by restricting your intake of salt and junk food. You must also exercise as it improves the heart function by extracting more oxygen from the blood. Include more fibre-rich foods in your diet such as fresh fruits, vegetables and wholegrain products. Avoid fried foods. Cut smoking as it causes arterial spasm, which restricts blood flow; and alcohol too is a killer, literally! Most drugs prescribed for cardiac diseases cause constipation. When you strain while passing stool, it puts undue stress on your heart. Eat bulk fibre foods.’Switch to heart-friendly vegetable oils such as rice bran, corn, soya, peanut or olive oil. Rotate oils to get the best of all. Substitute whole milk with low fat milk. If you like eating red meat, trim the fat before you cook, and include fish in your diet. Fish is low in saturated fats and high in protein. It also contains omega 3 fatty acids; these prevent the accumulation of triglycerides and increase the levels of HDL (good cholesterol) in the blood.Malady 5Hypertension’Hypertension is a condition in which the blood pressure in the arteries is chronically elevated. The causes can be stress, obesity, excessive alcohol consumption and smoking, or a genetic trigger. Hypertension causes your arteries to harden and clog. This can eventually lead to a stroke, heart failure and coronary disease,’ says Dr Ravi Patel, general surgeon and owner, Parvish Nursing Home, Mumbai.There are no obvious symptoms of hypertension. If you are overweight, you can bring down blood pressure with exercise and diet control. However, this does not mean that if you are slim and exercise regularly, you cannot have hypertension. If your systolic reading is 140 and above, and the diastolic reading 90 or above, you have high blood pressure. The parameters differ, depending on your age, sex and environment.advertisementWhat steps to takePrevent and manageExercise regularly. Brisk walking or swimming (30 minutes daily, to begin with) is the best activity, but you should start it only after getting a thorough health check-up done and on approval of a doctor. Practise meditation and yoga regularly, as they are known to benefit people with hypertension. Asanas such as yashtikasana, matsyasana, savasana, and nispand bhava are good for hypertension.Diet plays an important role in controlling this disease. Reduce your intake of salt, pickles, papad, junk and processed foods.Malady 6Constipation’Irregular bowel movement and hard, dried out faecal matter that is difficult to pass out of the body are the symptoms of constipation. You may be constipated if your diet lacks roughage and fibre or if you are under certain medication (especially for heart disease). Accumulation of faecal matter in your colon can cause gas, bloating and in worse cases, piles or a fissure tear in the anal area,’ says Dr Ravi Patel.What steps to takePrevent and manageEat a diet that is rich in fibrous foods such as fruits and vegetables as it will stimulate peristalsis (wave- like movement) of the colon. And, increase your fluid intake (8-10 glasses a day) – it will help soften your stool. Dr Ravi Patel says, ‘Use laxatives only as a last resort as they can become a habit and hinder the normal functioning of your intestines. Bowel motility drugs taken under a doctor’s supervision can help treat chronic constipation. Exercise regularly and do yoga as it improves digestion. Aim to get close to this: 2 portions of fruits, 3 portions of vegetables and 1 portion of salad every day,’ he adds. Prunes, figs and papaya are beneficial too; include them in your diet.Malady 7DiarrhoeaMore of a symptom than a disease, diarrhoea usually indicates that there is irritation or an infection in the intestines. The lining of the intestines, as a result, is unable to absorb the water and salt from the food you eat, which are therefore passed out of the body. ‘Diarrhoea may or may not be accompanied by cramps and pain in the abdomen. The stool can be semi-formed or watery, with or without blood. In severe cases, you may have to replace the fluid by intravenous drug infusion,’ says Dr Ravi Patel. Diarrhoea causes loss of essential salts and fluids, which can lead to dehydration. In babies and small children, it can prove to be fatal if not treated in time.What steps to takePreventWash your hands before you eat and keep hygiene while cooking.Avoid intake of roadside foods.ManageTake sugar and salt solutions to avoid dehydration. Give your child lots of fluids. If not water, even soda drinks, “flattened” (where the gas is out), is good – it is better than no fluid. Most mothers think only water will do, or the next best thing is fresh fruit juice. That is not true. The important thing is “fluid intake”.Malady 8Insomnia’Difficulty in falling asleep, waking up frequently during the night, or waking up too early with trouble going back to sleep again, are the symptoms of insomnia. These could occur all together or individually,’ says Dr BR Agarwal, MD psychiatry, MAPA, USA. Certain health problems, stress, depression and a change in one’s environment can lead to this. If the problem is transitory, then there is nothing to worry about, but when poor sleep becomes a pattern, there is cause for concern, as it can affect your health. He adds, ‘There is no standard span of time that specifies what “normal” sleep is. While some people survive on as less as 5 to 6 hours of sleep a night, others need more. If you’re feeling well in the morning and tired by afternoon, it could be a symptom of depression and insomnia. If you have not been sleeping for a minimum of 6 hours a day over a period of 2 to 3 weeks, you should consult a doctor immediately. Find out the reason why you are unable to sleep well. Your doctor may prescribe sleeping pills for a period of time (it will not make you an addict) to induce the habit, but natural sleep is better for your overall health.’What steps to takePrevent and manageTake a warm bath before you go to bed.Make sure the curtains in your bedroom are drawn properly, so that no outside light disturbs.Keep your room clean and clutter-free.Do not drink tea or coffee in the evenings.Look for alternative methods of treatment such as meditation and yoga. Deep breathing exercises will help relax your mind and body, and may get you to sleep better.’Watching TV when you can’t sleep aggravates the problem, as the flashing lights stimulate the brain and therefore increase insomnia. Instead, try light reading in bed,’ says Dr Agarwal.Malady 9Depression’Depression can be “reactive” – that is when the symptoms arise as a reaction to a situation; or it may be endogenous, where you may be depressed because of certain chemical changes in your body,’ says Dr BR Agarwal. ‘Reactive depression can arise from the loss of a loved one, or problems in one’s relationship, or on the work front. In most cases, depression disappears when the problem gets solved or when the patient takes the help of psychotherapy,’ he explains.Endogenous depression, however, requires medication. The symptoms of which may be a sense of being overwhelmed by the drudgery of day-to-day existence, a feeling of helplessness, dejection, bouts of unexplained crying, and suicidal thoughts. He adds, ‘Depression is fully curable, and should not be equated to mental illness. Consult a psychiatrist if you think you have issues, without worrying about what the society might think or being ashamed of it. When there is a lack of interest in daily activities and you feel sad for more than three weeks, consult a doctor to know what ails you and what you should do to manage this condition.’What steps to takePrevent and manageTake help and support from your friends and family. Talking about your problems helps.Involve yourself in physical activities that would require you to get out of your house and meet people. At first this will be difficult; force yourself to do it in small bouts? reaction is guaranteed. Or participate in mentally stimulating things such as word puzzles or sudoku.Do not miss any dosage of prescribed medication.There is no shame consulting a psychiatric. At worst, she will tell you, that you are in fact, not clinically depressed, but just feeling naturally bad or low about something and it will pass.You need to change your attitude or work harder. The doctor can suggest ways to do this, but you must follow through.Malady 10Vaginal infection’The glands situated in the cervix and the vagina secrete a fluid that keeps the vaginal passage clean and healthy. When there is an infection, the discharge that is generally clear or white, changes colour,’ says Dr Archana Gaonkar, obstetrician and gynaecologist, BSES MG Hospital, Mumbai. ‘The infection can be fungal, bacterial or parasitical. The symptoms of a vaginal infection are itching, burning, redness of the external genitalia and a foul smell. As soon as you experience any of the above symptoms, seek medical assistance, as the infection can spread to your internal genital organs if not treated in time,’ she explains.What steps to takePrevent and manageWear cotton panties instead of nylon, lycra or lace, especially at the time of infection. Avoid tight jeans, thongs and other fitted garments.Keep your genital area clean. After using the toilet, always clean yourself from front to back so as not to transfer the anal bacteria to the vagina.Avoid using harsh detergents to wash your undergarments. Gentle liquid soaps are good.Consult the doctor if it is advisable to have intercourse when you’re undergoing the treatment.
