Bucks plan moves for a dynasty around Giannis Antetokounmpo

first_img Trail Blazers, Grizzlies advance to NBA play-in game; Suns, Spurs see playoff dreams dashed LOS ANGELES — Eric Bledsoe had a buoyant stride in the hallways of Staples Center, looking like he had a great deal lifted from his shoulders.Another great deal is headed to his bank account. The former Clipper will be in Milwaukee for four more seasons after this one, after signing a $70 million extension on Friday. Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer said he usually likes going to work every day with Bledsoe – but even for a typically energized player, Friday might have been a little more bouncy.“He’s mostly like that every day,” he said. “He might’ve had a couple extra smiles in there.” Trail Blazers beat Grizzlies in play-in, earn first-round series with the Lakers Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Error “Just look at every single year how he’s been able to evolve as a player, obviously his physique has evolved, his mental approach has evolved and the franchise has evolved from his first year,” he said. “It is all going in the right direction. I think it’s greatly appreciated to see someone that gives their all to the game and I think when you do that, the game automatically gives back to you.”James himself had one of his best seasons in the sixth year of his career, winning the first of his four NBA MVP awards (28.4 ppg, 7.6 rpg, 7.2 apg) and leading the Cavaliers to 66 regular-season wins. Many speculate that Antetokounmpo is poised to claim the unofficial title as the league’s best player, which James has held for much of his career. James implied that if the Greek Freak has the same mindset he had at the same age, that day might soon be at hand.“I went to the Finals at 22, so I was thinking about being the best ever,” James said. “But I was thinking about how can I elevate this franchise, take it places that they hadn’t seen before. … But I wanted to continue to elevate that franchise every single day with not only my play on the floor but also my leadership off the floor and how I conducted myself as a young man.” Lakers practice early hoping to answer all questions center_img LeBron James, to whom Antetokounmpo is often compared, said he’s been impressed by how the young Bucks star has raised his game to meet the moment.Related Articles Lakers, Clippers schedules set for first round of NBA playoffs How athletes protesting the national anthem has evolved over 17 years AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREUCLA alum Kenny Clark signs four-year contract extension with PackersHow does a dynasty begin? Does it start with an imagination-sparking playoff run? Raising a championship trophy? It might just start on a Friday in March, when Milwaukee made a handful of inspired moves: Besides re-signing Bledsoe (15.7 ppg, 5.5 apg, 4.6 rpg), the Bucks also reportedly will sign Pau Gasol, the 38-year-old center who was bought out by the San Antonio Spurs earlier in the day. All signs point to Milwaukee trying to secure the future, both this season and beyond, to build something special around franchise star Giannis Antetokounmpo. At 24, the Greek Freak is the apparent front-runner to win MVP this season, and his numbers (27 ppg, 12.6 rpg, 5.9 apg) as well as Milwaukee’s NBA-best record entering Friday night, justify that case. While Lakers coach Luke Walton said he’s seen more of James Harden, who is also in the running to go back-to-back for the award, Antetokounmpo’s unique abilities at 6-foot-11 jumped off the screen as he studied film on Thursday.“He plays the right way,” Walton said. “He can get to the rim and get his own shot anytime he wants, and he has the green light to do that. And he still makes the appropriate passes when they’re available. So I really respect that about his game.”Fueled by an innovative system installed by Budenholzer in his first season, the Bucks have both the best offensive rating (113.3) and the best defensive rating (104.0) in the league. They’ve gotten 3-point shooting not only from first-time All-Star Khris Middleton but from the frontcourt in former Lakers center Brook Lopez (36 percent from deep).last_img read more

Messi ends Chelsea drought to give Barcelona last-16 edge

first_imgLondon, United Kingdom | AFP | Chelsea manager Antonio Conte rued one costly mistake as Lionel Messi gave Barcelona the upper hand from the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie by salvaging a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.Messi struck for the first time in nine games against Chelsea 15 minutes from the end, as Andres Iniesta punished the English champions once more when he intercepted Andreas Christensen’s slack pass across his own box to tee up the five-time World Player of the Year.Willian’s fine strike just after the hour mark had put Chelsea in command after he had hit both posts in the first half. Chelsea must now score when they travel to the Camp Nou on March 14 to have any chance of making the last eight.“Against this opponent, this type of player like Messi, (Luis) Suarez, Iniesta, if you make a mistake you pay,” said Conte. “We failed to create clear-cut chances despite having domination of the game. In the end it came from an error from them and we took advantage,” said Barca coach Ernesto Valverde.“It is a good score given we were behind and clearly there is everything left to decide in the second leg.”Conte sprang a surprise before kick-off by leaving out both Olivier Giroud and Alvaro Morata with Eden Hazard instead operating in the middle of a front three.Share on: WhatsApp Pages: 1 2center_img “There is a bit of disappointment. But at the same time this game must give us a lot of confidence to trust that in the second leg the qualification is open.”Nine years on from combining for a stoppage-time equaliser in a highly controversial semi-final at Stamford Bridge to send Barca to the final, Iniesta and Messi swapped roles as this time the Spaniard provided the pass and Messi the finish.last_img read more
